Is Judge Judy still alive? Yes: a birthday death hoax spreads as Judy Sheindlin turns 84 and 'Judy Justice' ends
If you searched “is Judge Judy still alive” on Wednesday, you were far from alone. “Judge judy” topped 100,000 Google searches in the US on Oct. 21, and the related questions were blunt: “is judge judy still alive” and “judge judy is she still alive.” The short answer is yes. Judy Sheindlin, the TV judge known to millions as Judge Judy, turned 84 on Wednesday, and the post that set off the scare was a parody, not news.
The timing added to the confusion. Sheindlin is in the middle of stepping away from on-camera work, and her current show, “Judy Justice,” releases its series finale on Thursday, Oct. 22, according to Variety.
Is Judge Judy still alive?
Yes. According to a fact check published by the Hindustan Times, a Facebook post styled as news went viral on her birthday. It showed a black-and-white photo of Sheindlin with overlay text reading “Today We Lost 83-Year-Old Judge Judy.”
The caption made clear it was a joke and a birthday message: “Today we lost 82-year-old Judge Judy because she is now 84,” the post read, per the Hindustan Times, which noted the account behind it was a parody page. Out of context, though, the image looked like an obituary, and it spread quickly.
Her official Instagram account, meanwhile, marked the day with a birthday post featuring one of her well-known lines, the outlet reported. There have been no credible reports of any health emergency. As always with viral death claims, the best check is the person’s own verified accounts or established news organizations, not a screenshot.
Why the hoax landed now: ‘Judy Justice’ is ending
In September, Sheindlin announced she was retiring from onscreen work after about 30 years of presiding over TV courtrooms. Variety reported that “Judy Justice,” which premiered in 2021 on Amazon’s now-defunct Freevee service and now streams on Prime Video, would release its series finale on Oct. 22. People magazine was first to report the retirement, Variety noted.
Explaining the decision on “Good Morning America,” Sheindlin pointed to her son, judge Adam Levy, saying “he’s ready,” and joked that she planned to become “the Benjamin Button of court,” according to Variety. “I’m still going to be creative,” she said.
So while she is leaving the bench on camera, she is not leaving television.
What Judy Sheindlin is doing next
According to Variety’s September interview with her, Sheindlin has handed the on-air gavel to Levy, whose daytime court show “Adam’s Law” launched on CBS on Sept. 14. Levy is a former district attorney for Putnam County, New York, and previously sat on “Tribunal Justice.”
Behind the camera, Variety reported she remains busy as a producer on a half-dozen shows, including “Adam’s Law,” “Hot Bench,” and the “Judy Justice,” “Tribunal Justice” and “Justice on Trial” series on Prime Video. She is also developing an animated project nicknamed the “Judyverse,” built around the long-running “Baby Judy” memes, through her Queen Bee Productions banner.
Judith Sheindlin’s career in brief
- Family court: She was appointed to the New York Family Court bench in 1982, the Hindustan Times reported, and became known for blunt questioning and no-nonsense rulings.
- The TV break: A 1993 “60 Minutes” profile by Morley Safer caught the attention of producer Larry Lyttle, who persuaded her to try television, according to Variety.
- “Judge Judy”: The syndicated show premiered in 1996 and ran for 25 seasons until 2021. Variety credits it with reviving the courtroom-show genre, and at her peak Sheindlin earned more than $45 million a year.

CBS also saluted her career in September with a two-hour special, “Judge Judy: Unfiltered, Unforgettable.”
