Few pop-star looks are as recognizable as Ariana Grande’s sky-high ponytail. So when the singer showed up on Instagram with a short, swingy bob, fans noticed fast, and many started calling her “Bobiana.”

Grande, 33, shared selfies of the new cut on Thursday, Oct. 22, People reported.

What does Ariana Grande’s new haircut look like?

It’s a retro-style bob, worn with a deep side part and flipped-out ends. Outlets describe the length a little differently: Vogue called it “jaw-grazing,” while USA TODAY described it as shoulder-length. The color is a glossy dark brown that Vogue called chocolate and InStyle described as soft chestnut.

She styled it with extra-long lashes, a French manicure and, per InStyle, a blush pink ribbon tied around her neck with a white lace top. She captioned the post with a simple heart.

Who cut Ariana Grande’s hair?

Celebrity hairstylist Brandon Pietsch, who handled both the cut and the color. “The ponytail is taking a hiatus,” he wrote on Instagram, adding on his Stories that she is now “in her bob era,” InStyle reported. Vogue noted that Pietsch also works with Rosé and Megan Fox.

Why is it such a big change?

Grande’s long hair has been part of her image for years:

  • The ponytail: Her high pony has been a signature look through much of her career, Vogue noted.
  • Wicked era: Playing Glinda in “Wicked,” she went buttery blonde but kept her length.
  • Eternal Sunshine Tour: On the tour, her hair flowed past her lower back and was usually styled in buns or ponytails, USA TODAY reported.

USA TODAY said the new cut is among the shortest she has worn in recent years and resembles her styling in “The Boy Is Mine” music video from 2024.

What has she been up to?

Grande has kept a low profile since wrapping the Eternal Sunshine Tour on Sept. 1, which ended with a 10-night run at London’s O2 Arena, according to USA TODAY. The haircut is one of her first big public moments since.

Whether the bob is temporary is anyone’s guess. Pietsch’s word was “hiatus,” not “goodbye.”
