Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont has won a third term as Connecticut’s governor, defeating Republican state Sen. Ryan Fazio in Tuesday’s election. The Associated Press called the race around 9:15 p.m. ET, Connecticut Public reported.

Democrats were also leading every other statewide race and all five of the state’s U.S. House districts, and they added to their existing supermajority in the state legislature, according to Connecticut Public.

Who won the CT governor race?

Lamont did. With about 95% of the expected vote reported early Wednesday, ABC7 New York’s results showed:

Candidate Party Votes Share
Ned Lamont (incumbent) Democrat 718,126 59%
Ryan Fazio Republican 503,032 41%

These are unofficial totals. Patch noted that results are not final until certified by state election officials.

Lamont, 72, has led Connecticut since 2019. He ran with Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, and the Democratic ticket also appeared on the Working Families Party line, Patch reported. He previously beat Republican Bob Stefanowski in 2018 and 2022. Connecticut has not had a Republican governor since 2006.

“Thank you Connecticut - I am so humbled by your trust,” Lamont wrote on X, according to Patch. “Tonight, we made history. Tomorrow, we get back to work.”

What Lamont said in his victory speech

Celebrating at Dunkin Park, Lamont returned to the economic themes of his campaign, Connecticut Public reported.

“It doesn’t work, this economy, unless it works for everybody. And right now there are too many people getting left behind,” he said. “The middle class is getting slammed.”

Ryan Fazio concedes

Fazio, 36, a Greenwich Republican first elected to the state Senate in 2021, ran with Matt Corey, a veteran and Manchester business owner. Their ticket also appeared on the Independent Party line, Patch reported.

“While tonight was not the outcome that we hoped for, the central premise of our campaign remains true. We love Connecticut,” Fazio said in his concession speech in Stamford.

He told Connecticut Public it is too soon to say whether he would run for governor again, and said the state Republican Party needs to be rebuilt. “I would argue that the reason Connecticut is so deeply unaffordable and economically stagnant, is because it’s lacked the political competition,” Fazio said.

Both candidates focused heavily on the cost of living. Lamont ran on his record, while Fazio called for changes to state tax and energy policy. They also split over housing, education, immigration enforcement and the role of state government, according to Patch.

How voting went in Connecticut

State officials said voting ran smoothly with only minor issues, such as a fire alarm at one polling place and some tabulator problems, Connecticut Public reported. More than 500,000 voters cast ballots before Election Day, including about 455,000 during early voting, which ran Oct. 19 to Nov. 1, and more than 50,000 absentee ballots.

Federal election monitors sent by the Justice Department stood outside some New Haven polling places. Local registrars denied them access inside, citing state law.
