2027 Tax Brackets: IRS Raises Income Thresholds and the Standard Deduction
The Internal Revenue Service on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, published inflation adjustments for tax year 2027 in news release IR-2026-133 and Revenue Procedure 2026-35. The update covers nearly 70 provisions, including the federal income tax brackets and the standard deduction that most people will use when they file returns in 2028.

2027 federal income tax brackets
The seven marginal rates stay the same: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. What rose are the taxable-income thresholds for each rate. NerdWallet said the inflation factor used for 2027 was 3.2%, larger than the prior two years.
According to the IRS, CNBC and NerdWallet, key 2027 brackets include:
| Rate | Single (taxable income) | Married filing jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $0 to $12,800 | $0 to $25,600 |
| 12% | over $12,800 to $52,025 | over $25,600 to $104,050 |
| 22% | over $52,025 to $109,125 | over $104,050 to $218,250 |
| 24% | over $109,125 to $208,325 | over $218,250 to $416,650 |
| 32% | over $208,325 to $264,550 | over $416,650 to $529,100 |
| 35% | over $264,550 to $661,375 | over $529,100 to $793,650 |
| 37% | over $661,375 | over $793,650 |
NerdWallet’s comparison tables show the top 37% cutoff rising from $640,600 (single) and $768,700 (joint) in 2026. Married couples can earn up to $104,050 and still have a top rate of 12%, versus $100,800 in 2026 — about $3,250 more sheltered from the 22% band, NerdWallet noted.
Standard deduction for 2027
The IRS raised the standard deduction to:
- $33,200 for married couples filing jointly (up $1,000 from 2026)
- $16,600 for single filers and married filing separately (up $500)
- $24,925 for heads of household (up $775)
Those figures come from the IRS newsroom release and match CNBC and NerdWallet summaries.

CNBC also flagged updates to long-term capital gains brackets and earned income tax credit parameters in the same inflation package. Personal exemptions remain at zero under current law, the IRS noted.
What this means in plain terms
Bracket indexing is meant to limit “bracket creep,” where a cost-of-living raise pushes more income into a higher rate even though purchasing power is flat. Higher thresholds and a larger standard deduction can leave more income taxed at lower rates or excluded from tax — but exact results depend on filing status, deductions and other income. CNBC tied the release to ongoing affordability pressure, noting September 2026 CPI ran 3.7% year over year.
