Darik Pearson's final message: Funbags frontman urged fans not to put off cancer checkups
More than a week after his death, people across the US are still searching for Darik Pearson, the longtime frontman of the Connecticut party band Darik and the Funbags. Searches for “darik pearson cover band frontman” passed 50,000 on Google Trends over the past day, up from about 20,000 a day earlier. Pearson died at home on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 54, after a six-year fight with prostate cancer, according to his obituary.
Our earlier story covered his life and career. Here’s what has drawn people back to his story: the tributes from the venues he played, and a final public message he hoped would save lives.
“Sharing my story is potentially saving a life”
Pearson was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer in September 2020, FOX61 reported. In his last Facebook post, published Sept. 1, he described how serious his illness had become and said he knew he had little chance of beating it.
“It’s important to me that I share my story as often as possible because sharing my story is potentially saving a life,” he wrote, according to FOX61. He called his cancer one that is otherwise “considered a treatable and preventative cancer as far as cancers go,” and said it “had become a death sentence for me at no direct fault of my own.”
Pearson believed a late diagnosis cut his chances of recovery, and that health care providers had overlooked him, FOX61 reported. His advice to men and women, as summarized by the station:
- Do your own research and advocate for yourself.
- Don’t assume new aches and pains are just signs of aging.
- Live as healthfully as you can.
- Don’t put off further exams or treatment.
“If you’ve been putting it off, here’s your chance to reconsider,” he wrote.
His wife, Michele, said that was his lasting wish. “Darik’s wish was that sharing his journey of all the trials and treatments he has participated in over the last 6 years may save someone’s life someday,” she wrote on social media, according to FOX61. “He said nothing would make it more worth it.”

What venues are saying
The Funbags played almost every Saturday night of the year, and venue owners told FOX61 that no Connecticut band was more popular over the past three decades. The Truck Bar in Berlin, Connecticut, was one of their regular stops.
“A night with Darik and the Funbags was always a guaranteed hit here,” co-owner Merle McKenzie told the station. “And if we could, we would have had them five times a year here.”
McKenzie said Pearson’s death “wasn’t a surprise, but it’s still shocking,” and called him a hero for the painful treatments he went through. “I think he did in part so that other people wouldn’t have to fight this fight,” McKenzie said.
FOX61 reported that some treatments forced Pearson to miss shows, but he took the stage as often as he could, even in his final weeks. In May, at Sonny’s Place in Somers, he sang John Mellencamp’s “Jack and Diane” while riding on his bandmates’ shoulders.
What happens to the Funbags?
The band has not announced its plans, as far as we could find. FOX61 said it was not immediately clear what is next, but McKenzie expects the members will want to play in Pearson’s honor. “The Funbags will be coming back in November again, hopefully they’ll still be playing in honor of Darik’s memory,” McKenzie said.
As of Thursday, the band’s official website still listed shows in November and December, including Nov. 28 at Toad’s Place in New Haven and Dec. 11 at the Truck Bar in Berlin. We could not confirm whether those dates will go ahead or in what form, so check with the venue before you go.
How to help the family
FOX61 reported that an online fundraiser started for Pearson’s medical bills remains active, and that the money will now go toward his service expenses and support for his wife and children. His obituary asks that, in lieu of flowers, people make memorial contributions to an education fund for his sons, Darik Jr. (DJ) and Ryan. A celebration of his life was held Oct. 18 in Trumbull; other services were private.
