Darik Pearson, the frontman of the long-running Northeast party band Darik and the Funbags, has died at 54. He died at his home on Tuesday, Oct. 13, after a six-year battle with prostate cancer, according to his obituary and NBC Connecticut. More than a week later, searches for “Darik Pearson cover band frontman” climbed past 20,000 in the US on Google Trends as fans across the region shared memories.

Who was Darik Pearson?

Pearson led the Funbags for nearly 30 years. The band has performed across the Northeast since 1997, NBC Connecticut reported, and his obituary says he brought its energy “to all venues, community events and everywhere in between.” He sang lead and played bass. His obituary notes he was rarely seen without his trademark stocking cap.

“No performance was ever the same, and the people that followed them in their early 20s are now in their 50s and 60s and yet he still had that same energy,” composer James Norkawich, a friend, told NBC Connecticut. “The music world, at least here in Connecticut and Massachusetts, will never be the same.”

Pearson was born in Bridgeport on July 27, 1972. He graduated from Shelton High School in 1990 and earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Southern Connecticut State University, according to his obituary. He lived in Shelton.

His family

His obituary describes him above all as a husband and father. It says he loved Mets games with his son DJ and watching his son Ryan play baseball. He is survived by his wife, Michele Kopchak Pearson, who announced his death on Facebook; their sons Darik Jr. (DJ) and Ryan; his parents, John and Ruthann; and other relatives. A celebration of his life was held Sunday, Oct. 18, at Abriola Parkview Funeral Home in Trumbull. The family asked for memorial gifts to an education fund for his children in lieu of flowers.

Early-onset cancer

Pearson was diagnosed in 2020, at 48. NBC Connecticut tied his death to research on rising cancer rates among younger adults. Dr. Veda Giri, who directs the Early Onset Cancer program at Yale Cancer Center, told the station that researchers are studying “very interesting data about the rise of early onset cancers in Gen X and millennials.” Possible factors under study include diet, environment and lifestyle, she said.

If prostate cancer runs in your family, talk to a doctor about when screening makes sense for you.
