Barcelona vs. Aston Villa Aftermath: Emery Says Villa Must Be 'Ruthless' as Flick Hails Defense After 3-0
Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday, Nov. 3, ended Villa’s perfect start to the Champions League league phase. It also handed Unai Emery another painful night at the stadium. Lamine Yamal scored in the seventh minute after a Villa giveaway, and Raphinha added two goals in the second half. Barcelona have now won 13 of their 15 games this season, BBC Sport reported.
The day after, the talk is about how close Villa came early, how wide the gap looked late, and what both coaches took from the matchday 4 result.
Barcelona vs. Aston Villa: the result in brief
- Final: Barcelona 3, Aston Villa 0
- Goals: Lamine Yamal 7’, Raphinha 52’, Raphinha 64’
- Table: Barcelona moved past Villa into second place in the league phase. Both teams have 9 points from four games.
BBC Sport said Villa matched Barcelona for much of an “engrossing first half” in driving rain. Matty Cash, Joao Gomes and Johan Manzambi (twice) all had chances. Leon Goretzka hit the post in the second half, but Barcelona already led 2-0 by then. The Guardian called it “a demonstration of the gap, still, at the very top.”
What Unai Emery said
Emery, who turned 55 on Tuesday, was frank about Villa’s finishing. “We must be ruthless in the attacking third, 3-0 is maybe more than we deserved, but we accept the defeat,” he said, according to BBC Sport.
He also defended Gomes, whose misplaced pass led to the opening goal: “We are working for years together and we made mistakes like that but we have always overcome those mistakes. I am not blaming him.”
Speaking to TNT Sports, Emery added: “This is the level we want to achieve again. Today was a good experience, bad result, but good things as well. In this level you must be more ruthless.”
Captain John McGinn called the night “a huge learning curve for us” and said Villa had shown they could compete against teams like Bayern Munich and PSG.
A tough record at Camp Nou
According to BBC Sport, Emery has now lost 15 of his 16 games at the Camp Nou and won only three of 31 meetings with Barcelona. The stadium was also the site of “La Remontada” in 2017, when Barcelona overturned a 4-0 first-leg deficit to beat Emery’s Paris Saint-Germain 6-1. BBC Sport added that this was Villa’s joint-heaviest defeat in major European competition.
What Hansi Flick said
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick praised a patched-up defense. BBC Sport said Barcelona were without Andreas Christensen, Eric García and Xavi Espart, and 20-year-old Brian Fariñas made his Champions League debut at right-back.
“It was important to defend together and stay compact. The defence put in a great performance, and so did Joan Garcia,” Flick said, according to the club. He singled out young defenders Fariñas, Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín.
The shutout mattered. BBC Sport said Barcelona had gone 18 Champions League games without a clean sheet, a run going back to April 2025.
Flick also addressed the death of Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel, which had affected Raphinha in particular. “We would like to express our condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel, to CD Tenerife, and to everyone close to him. We are human beings, and it has affected us as well,” he said. The Guardian reported that stadiums across Europe held a moment of silence for de Miguel before kickoff.
On fitness, Flick said the midfielder replaced at halftime by 19-year-old Marc Bernal “felt some discomfort,” and the team would assess him the next day.
Raphinha and Pedri
Raphinha’s double gave him 19 goals in 13 appearances this season, the Guardian reported. The paper called Pedri “the real star” for his 69 minutes in midfield, and said his driving run helped create the second goal.

- Barcelona: Away at Atlético Madrid in La Liga on Sunday, according to the club.
- Aston Villa: Away at Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, BBC Sport reported.
In the Champions League, both clubs have 9 points with four league-phase games left, and the Guardian said Villa remain well placed.
