No. 6 Indiana beats Michigan 13-6 in overtime on Josh Hoover's TD run, first win at the Big House since 1967
It was ugly, it was low-scoring and it took an extra period, but No. 6 Indiana finally won at Michigan Stadium again. Josh Hoover ran in from 4 yards out on the first possession of overtime, and the Hoosiers held Michigan out of the end zone for a 13-6 win on Saturday, Oct. 24, in Ann Arbor.
It was Indiana’s first win at the Big House since 1967, according to the Associated Press. The Hoosiers improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten. Michigan fell to 4-3 and 1-3 in front of a crowd of 111,276.
How Indiana won in overtime
Neither offense did much in regulation. Indiana built a 6-0 halftime lead on two Nico Radicic field goals, from 22 and 34 yards. Michigan’s Trey Butkowski answered with a 29-yarder in the third quarter after Zeke Berry intercepted Hoover and returned it 37 yards.
Michigan then put together its best drive of the day, a 13-play, 53-yard march that ate the final 7:32 of the fourth quarter. The Wolverines reached the Indiana 3 in the final minute with a chance to win, but freshman quarterback Tommy Carr was sacked for a fourth time and Michigan settled for Butkowski’s 26-yard field goal as time expired to tie it 6-6.
Indiana got the ball first in overtime. Hoover, who struggled most of the afternoon, hit Brock Schott for 21 yards on the first snap and then kept it himself for the 4-yard touchdown. Michigan answered by driving to the Indiana 13, but on fourth down Carr’s pass hit the turf in front of Salesi Moa just outside the end zone.

Josh Hoover played through injuries
Hoover finished 8 of 18 for 81 yards with an interception, and he is not fully healthy. Coach Curt Cignetti said the staff talked during the second half about turning to backup Grant Wilson, a seventh-year player, before sticking with Hoover.
“At the end of the day, it’s been Josh’s season and even though he’s not 100%, we’ve got to finish it out with him, and he responded,” Cignetti said, per the AP.
“I had to battle through some things this week to get out here,” Hoover said.
The win came a week after Indiana came up just short against then-No. 4 Ohio State, and it kept the Hoosiers from losing two straight games for the first time in Cignetti’s three years, the AP noted. Turbo Richard led Indiana with 68 rushing yards on 19 carries, and Lee Beebe Jr. added 56.
Michigan QB: Tommy Carr’s first start
Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham started Carr and sat Bryce Underwood, who came off the bench a week earlier in a win over Penn State. Carr became the sixth true freshman to start at quarterback for Michigan, according to the school. He completed 20 of 32 passes for 167 yards, with an interception and a lost fumble.
“Both turnovers, completely on me,” Carr said. He is the grandson of College Football Hall of Famers Lloyd Carr and Tom Curtis and the brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr, the AP reported.
“It would be absurd to judge him off this one performance,” Whittingham said.
Michigan scored just six points on four trips inside the red zone. Sacks in the second and third quarters stalled drives that ended in missed field goals, including a 32-yard miss after Michigan had reached the Indiana 1. The Wolverines ran for only 57 yards on 42 carries.
Michigan’s defense kept it close
Michigan’s defense held an Indiana offense that came in averaging 449.3 yards per game to 212 total yards and 81 passing yards, the first time the Hoosiers were held under 100 passing yards since Nov. 23, 2024, according to Michigan Athletics. Indiana converted only 4 of 14 third downs. Chris Bracy had a career-high 13 tackles.
| Team stat | Indiana | Michigan |
|---|---|---|
| Total yards | 212 | 224 |
| Passing yards | 81 | 167 |
| Rushing yards | 131 | 57 |
| Turnovers | 1 | 2 |
