Michael Carrick's Manchester United future in doubt after 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth
Michael Carrick’s job as Manchester United manager is under serious pressure after a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, Oct. 25. BBC Sport reported that senior figures at the club are in serious talks about his future. Carrick said afterward that he didn’t know what comes next.
The club had not announced any decision as of Sunday evening. This post covers what has been reported so far.
Man Utd vs. Bournemouth: what happened
Bournemouth took control with first-half goals from Rayan and Marcus Tavernier, TNT Sports reported. Evanilson added a third after United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was caught out of position.
Carrick pointed to two moments in the first half. “Leny [Yoro] slipped for one goal, it was a dubious free-kick against Ayden [Heaven] for another,” he told Sky Sports, according to BBC Sport. He called the third goal “a killer moment.”
Carrick also left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench for the whole game. BBC Sport and TNT Sports reported that the decision came after Fernandes questioned Carrick’s tactics following Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League loss at Como. Asked about it, Carrick said only that “those are the decisions we made today.” Harry Maguire captained the team instead.
How bad has Manchester United’s start been?
The numbers, as reported by BBC Sport and TNT Sports:
- United have just seven points from eight Premier League games (one win, four draws, three losses). That is their lowest total at this stage of a league season since 1986-87.
- They sit 16th, 14 points off the top, per BBC Sport.
- They are eight games without a win in all competitions, their first such run since late 2015.
- Their last top-flight win came on Aug. 30, a 5-2 victory over newly promoted Ipswich.
- It was their heaviest home Premier League defeat since another 3-0 loss to Bournemouth in December 2024.
What Michael Carrick said about his future
Carrick, 45, took interim charge in January after Ruben Amorim left and got the permanent job in May after leading United to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification, BBC Sport reported.
He did a lap of the field at full time as fans sang his name, but he said it wasn’t a goodbye. “It wasn’t a farewell from me,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s a tough situation, there’s no hiding from it. What it looks like and what’s next I really don’t know. I will always do my best for the football club and I won’t change that now.”
At his news conference, TNT Sports reported, Carrick was asked if he expected to be fired. “I am not expecting anything,” he said. “I will always do what is best for the football club. If I had the answers I would not have let it happen.”
Fans, players and pundits react
BBC Sport reported that the chants for Carrick turned to boos for the players after he left the field. TNT Sports said fans also aimed their anger at the Glazer family, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and sporting director Jason Wilcox, and that a “standards” banner was displayed in the Stretford End.
Maguire backed his manager. “We’re fully behind Michael,” he told BBC Sport, but he also told Sky Sports that “something needs to change.”
Former United defender Gary Neville said on Sky Sports that club executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox were “probably going to make a decision” soon, and called the situation “an absolute mess.” That was his opinion, not a confirmed plan.
