Patriots vs. Dolphins: the storylines
Reigning AFC champs vs. a young team. The Patriots went 14-3 last season and reached the Super Bowl. Miami coach Jeff Hafley said he has had to teach a roster with 15 rookies about the importance of division games, according to the AP.
Malik Willis vs. his old coach. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel coached Willis in Tennessee during the quarterback’s first two NFL seasons. Willis had his best game of the season in Miami’s first win last week, throwing for 208 yards and two touchdowns and running for another in a 28-25 win over the Jets. “I can’t say anything but great things about Coach Vrabel,” Willis said.
New England looking to bounce back. The Patriots lost 30-24 at Chicago last week, snapping a three-game win streak. They were expected to have their full starting secondary (Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Kevin Byard and Craig Woodson) together for the first time since Week 1.
Miami’s run game vs. New England’s run defense. The Dolphins came in averaging 131.5 rushing yards per game, seventh in the league, and had topped 100 yards in five straight games. New England ranked eighth against the run, allowing 95.3 yards per game.
Patriots vs. Dolphins prediction: the betting line
We don’t make picks. For context, the AP listed the Patriots as 7 1/2-point favorites before the game. New England won both meetings last season, including 38-10 on Jan. 4, 2026. The Dolphins lead the all-time series 63-55.
How the first half went
Per the CBS Sports play-by-play, Andres Borregales gave New England a 3-0 lead with a 34-yard field goal. A fumble after a Drake Maye completion was recovered by Miami’s JuJu Brents and set up a short field goal. Gonzalez later hit from 52 yards for a 6-3 Miami lead, and Borregales missed a 40-yard try wide right in the second quarter. Neither team had scored a touchdown at that point.
