Raiders Rally Past Jets 38-33: Kirk Cousins Accounts for 4 TDs, Jeremy Chinn Seals It
The Las Vegas Raiders gave up points on the New York Jets’ first six possessions and still found a way to win. Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, and Jeremy Chinn made a toe-tapping interception in the end zone in the final seconds as the Raiders rallied for a 38-33 win at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak and evened Las Vegas at 4-4. The Jets fell to 2-6 and have lost three in a row, according to the AP.
Raiders vs. Jets: how the comeback unfolded
New York looked in control for most of the first half. Geno Smith hit Garrett Wilson for 31 yards on the game’s first play, and the Jets scored on each of their first six drives, a mix of Jason Sanders field goals and touchdowns.
Las Vegas answered early with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Cousins to Brock Bowers on third-and-goal. After Smith found Isaiah Williams for an 18-yard score to make it 13-7, Dylan Laube returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. The AP noted it was the first kickoff return touchdown in the NFL this season and the first of Laube’s career.
Smith’s fourth-down fade to Adonai Mitchell and a late Sanders field goal sent the Jets into halftime up 23-14. That was notable on its own: the AP reported the Jets had been outscored 107-6 in the final two minutes of first halves over two seasons under coach Aaron Glenn.
The second half was a shootout. Cousins found Bowers again from 2 yards out, Braelon Allen answered with a 21-yard touchdown run for a 30-21 Jets lead, and Cousins pushed in from the 1 to cut it to 30-28 late in the third quarter. The Jets finally punted on their seventh drive.
Ashton Jeanty’s big play
Ashton Jeanty had only two carries for 9 yards, but he delivered the play of the game. Trailing 30-28, Cousins threw a screen to Jeanty, who stumbled, recovered and raced 45 yards to the Jets’ 13. Five plays later, Cousins hit Jalen Nailor for a 2-yard touchdown and a 35-30 lead with 11:33 left.
Jeanty finished with three catches for 64 yards. Earlier in the week, according to the AP, he had said the Jets’ defense seemed to have players who don’t like to tackle.
Is Ashton Jeanty injured?
The game reports we reviewed did not describe an injury to Jeanty in this game. Rookie Mike Washington Jr. got most of the work in the Raiders’ backfield, carrying 25 times for 83 yards, while Jeanty was used more as a receiver. The AP described the Las Vegas run game as “struggling.” Teams have not shared any further details on the split of carries.
The finish: Matt Gay and Jeremy Chinn
Mitchell’s falling 47-yard catch set up a 31-yard Sanders field goal that cut it to 35-33 with 4:31 left. The Raiders then drained the clock with Washington on the ground, and Matt Gay hit a 53-yard field goal with 31 seconds left for a five-point lead.
The Jets had one last shot. A 15-yard catch by Wilson and an unnecessary roughness penalty on Chinn moved the ball to the Las Vegas 35. Smith’s throw to the end zone with 14 seconds left was intercepted by Chinn, who kept both feet in bounds to end it.
