Who is Alijah Martin?
Martin is a 24-year-old former second-round pick who had not reached double figures in points or minutes in Toronto’s first eight games, NBC Sports noted. On Friday he went 9-of-11 from the field, 6-of-7 from three and 3-of-4 at the line, adding four rebounds, two steals and a block in 31 minutes off the bench, per NBC Sports and ESPN.
Sports Illustrated called him “a bright spot” in an otherwise poor shooting night from deep: the rest of the team struggled, and Toronto finished 9-of-32 from three. SI suggested Martin may earn a larger role if he keeps producing.
Raptors without Barnes, Quickley and Leonard
Toronto played without Scottie Barnes (groin), Immanuel Quickley (hamstring) and Kawhi Leonard (knee), NBC Sports reported. SI said it was Leonard’s sixth straight missed game.
Others filled the gap:
- RJ Barrett: 27 points on 9-of-21 shooting and 9-of-11 free throws, with seven rebounds and five assists in 37 minutes.
- Jamal Shead: 10 points and 16 assists with just one turnover and a game-high +23 in his first start of the season, per Yardbarker and ESPN.
- Jakob Poeltl: 19 points and 11 rebounds.
- Collin Murray-Boyles: 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Note: SI’s quick-takeaways piece listed Shead with 15 assists, but ESPN’s box score and Yardbarker both credit him with 16.
How the Bucks lost the lead
Milwaukee out-rebounded Toronto 24-14 in the first half and led 60-51 at the break, per SI and ESPN. The Raptors then won the third quarter 38-27 and the fourth 32-20.
Tyler Herro led Milwaukee with 23 points and 10 assists, and Brayden Burries added 21 points and 11 rebounds, ESPN’s box shows. Myles Turner went 0-for-7 from the field.
At 1-8, the Bucks are off to one of the league’s worst starts, Yardbarker noted.
