Jalen Williams injury: Thunder star stretchered off with serious left leg injury late in win over Clippers
Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Jalen Williams was taken off the court on a stretcher Sunday night, Oct. 25, after a serious injury to his lower left leg in the final minutes of a 108-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. As of early Monday, the team had not announced a diagnosis.
“We’re not doing great,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said after the game, according to ESPN. He said the team would be briefed Monday morning on Williams’ condition.
What happened to Jalen Williams
Williams, known to fans as “J-Dub,” was hurt on a drive to the basket with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter. He was fouled on the play.
ESPN reported that he came down awkwardly and his left leg collapsed under him, with his left foot bending out to the side at an unnatural angle. NBC Sports described Derrick Jones Jr. meeting him at the rim in front and Kris Dunn behind him. Dunn was called for the foul.
A staffer quickly covered Williams’ lower leg with towels, and medical personnel attended to him right away. The game was stopped for about five minutes. Williams was wheeled off, sitting up on a stretcher, to a standing ovation, and he gave the crowd two thumbs-up as fans chanted “J-Dub.”
Is it his ankle or his knee?
The team hasn’t said, and reports differ:
- AP described an injury to his “lower left leg” and said his ankle was draped in towels.
- NBC Sports wrote that the replay looked to its writer like a knee bending awkwardly, while noting that some reports from the arena pointed more toward the ankle.
Some outlets have published sports doctors’ guesses based on the video. Those are speculation until the Thunder release an official update. No return timeline has been announced.
Emotional scene for the Thunder
The injury shook both benches. ESPN reported that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander buried his face in his jersey and bent down near Williams. In a televised postgame interview he fought back tears, according to AP.
“Just feel bad for him,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “He just loves playing, loves the competition. That’s who he is. … It’s unfortunate, his luck so far. But he’s equipped for it.”
He added: “He’s not gone forever. He’ll be back better than ever. We know it. We’ve just got to hold the fort down until he comes back.”
Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt posted that “our whole city will have JDub in our thoughts and prayers,” AP reported.
Williams’ injury history
Williams averaged 18 points over his first 250 NBA games. He has been an All-Star and All-NBA selection and was a key part of the Thunder’s 2025 championship team. He missed 49 games last season, mostly with hamstring problems and recovery from major surgery on his right wrist, according to AP.
