Final: Seahawks 20, Chiefs 3. The Kansas City Chiefs are no longer unbeaten. The Seattle Seahawks smothered Patrick Mahomes and Kenneth Walker III on Sunday night, Oct. 25, at Lumen Field, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught nine passes for 150 yards and a touchdown in a 20-3 win.
Seattle, the defending Super Bowl champion, snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 4-3. Kansas City fell to 5-1.
Chiefs vs. Seahawks score by quarter
| Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Final |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chiefs | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 3 |
| Seahawks | 0 | 10 | 3 | 7 | 20 |
Jason Myers opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal at the end of a 15-play, 86-yard drive in the second quarter. After Ty Okada intercepted Mahomes, Sam Darnold hit Smith-Njigba for a 28-yard touchdown on third-and-9 with 1:44 left in the half, according to the NFL’s official game summary.
Myers added a 35-yarder in the third quarter, and Harrison Butker answered with a 50-yard field goal for Kansas City’s only points. Emanuel Wilson’s 21-yard touchdown run with 3:47 to play closed it out.
Seattle’s defense shuts down Mahomes and Walker
The Chiefs came in with the NFL’s top offense, averaging 414 yards a game, KSHB 41 reported. They left with 213 total yards, 11 first downs and a 3-of-11 mark on third down.
Seahawks.com said it was the first time the Chiefs had been kept out of the red zone in a Mahomes start. It was also their lowest yardage and first-down total in a Mahomes start, and their 3 points tied the fewest in any game he has started.
| Chiefs player | Stat line |
|---|---|
| Patrick Mahomes | 19 of 33, 165 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT |
| Kenneth Walker III | 14 carries, 36 yards; 4 catches, 21 yards |
| Travis Kelce | 4 catches, 44 yards |
The Walker matchup drew wide attention. He was Super Bowl MVP for Seattle in February before signing with Kansas City, and he entered the night leading the league in rushing. His former team held him to 2.6 yards per carry. NBC News reported that Walker walked off the field after the loss without greeting his former teammates.
“You gotta feel it. This sucks,” Mahomes said, according to NBC News. He added, per KSHB 41: “You don’t want to perform like this in primetime, in a big moment like this.”
Chiefs coach Andy Reid put it on himself. “All three phases, we struggled,” he said. “So, we’ve got to do better and that’s my responsibility.”
Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s big night
Smith-Njigba had 129 yards and a score on six catches by halftime. It was his sixth 100-yard game in seven games this season, and Seahawks.com says he now leads the league with eight touchdown catches. With 867 yards, he joined Jerry Rice (1986) and teammate Cooper Kupp (2021) as the only players with 800 receiving yards and eight touchdowns through seven games of a season.
Darnold went 20 of 28 for 257 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Nohl Williams picked him off in the end zone just before halftime and returned it 65 yards, but Butker’s 58-yard try fell short. Wilson carried 24 times for 100 yards. NBC News said he was the first Seahawk to reach 100 rushing yards since Walker did it in the Super Bowl.
Seattle went 11 of 16 on third down and held the ball for 35:51.
“Really proud of our team,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said, per NBC News. “To stand steadfast in some adversity, that’s what we do. We find solutions.”
Chiefs injuries and Butker’s misses
Kansas City played without both starting tackles, Josh Simmons (injured reserve) and Jaylon Moore, and without receivers Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton, KSHB 41 reported. Butker missed from 58 yards before halftime and from 45 yards in the fourth quarter, when a make would have cut the lead to one score.
“He’s been one of the most consistent kickers in football, but he’s off a bit,” Reid said. “We’ve got to fix it.”
One bright spot: Kelce moved into fifth place on the NFL’s all-time receptions list, passing Cris Carter and Marvin Harrison.
What’s next
The Chiefs still lead the AFC West by half a game. They visit the Denver Broncos (5-2) next Sunday, KSHB 41 reported. Seattle, now two games behind San Francisco in the NFC West, plays its next two games at home, according to NBC News.
