Miyoko's Creamery plant-based butter recalled over possible E. coli, yeast and mold: lot code, states and what to do
Before you reach for the butter dish, check the brand. More than 1,300 cases of Miyoko’s Creamery European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter have been recalled over concerns about yeast, mold and potential E. coli contamination, according to a Food and Drug Administration enforcement report covered by USA TODAY, FOX61 and Delish on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
No illnesses have been reported, according to the reports. Only one plant-based product is affected. Regular dairy butter is not part of this recall.
This article is general consumer information, not medical advice. If you feel sick after eating a recalled product, contact a health care provider.
Which butter is recalled?
The recall covers a single product and lot:
| Detail | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Product | Miyoko’s Creamery European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter |
| Size | 8-ounce package |
| UPC | 857554005773 |
| Lot code | 07871 on the package; 1007871 on the outer case |

| Cases recalled | 1,304 |
Delish reported that the butter was sold in six-pack cases, with the sticks wrapped in wax paper inside a paperboard carton. It is kept in refrigerated and frozen sections.
Where was it sold?
According to the FDA, the product went to retailers in 10 states:
- Connecticut
- Florida
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Maryland
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- Wisconsin
Why was it recalled, and why now?
The recall isn’t brand-new. It started in September. USA TODAY and FOX61 report that Prosperity Organic Foods, the Boise, Idaho-based maker of Miyoko’s products, began a voluntary recall on Sept. 11. That came after the Massachusetts-based supermarket chain Market Basket told customers about high yeast results that didn’t meet its quality standards. Delish reported that retailers including Sprouts and Wegmans also posted notices at the time.
What changed this week is the official classification. On Oct. 23, the FDA classified it as a Class II recall. That means using the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, and the agency considers the chance of serious harm remote. The FDA’s enforcement report lists yeast, mold and E. coli as the reasons.
Miyoko’s Creamery told Delish that it “voluntarily pulled a very small number of products off the shelves out of an abundance of caution” and that any potentially affected products “have fully been removed from shelves.”
What should you do if you have it?
- Don’t eat it. Check the UPC, lot code and Nov. 5, 2026, best-by date against the table above.
- Return it or throw it out. USA TODAY and FOX61 say consumers can return it to the store for a full refund. Delish notes that refunds are offered at select retailers.
- Questions? The FDA can be reached at 1-888-INFO-FDA (1-888-463-6332).
E. coli symptoms to know
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as cited by USA TODAY, E. coli infections can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. Symptoms may start several days after exposure. Some strains can cause bloody diarrhea and serious complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can lead to kidney failure. Young children and older adults are especially vulnerable.
Meanwhile, regular butter is cheap
The recall comes as dairy butter is unusually affordable. Moneywise, citing a Dairy Herd Management analysis, reported that U.S. butter averaged $3.96 a pound in September, down almost $1 from a year earlier. Demand for protein-rich foods like Greek yogurt and cottage cheese has pushed dairy farmers toward milk with more protein and butterfat, leaving extra butterfat for butter and cheese. Analysts quoted in the report expect plentiful supply to keep weighing on prices through the end of 2026 and into 2027.
That’s good news for holiday bakers, as long as the butter in the fridge isn’t the recalled plant-based lot.
