Bo Bice Shows Off Short Hair and 89-Pound Weight Loss in Before-and-After Photos as He Teases New Music

The long hair that made Bo Bice instantly recognizable on American Idol is gone. The season 4 runner-up posted side-by-side photos on Instagram on Oct. 29 showing his old chest-length look next to a short, spiky cut, and used them to announce his first new music in two years.

What does Bo Bice look like now?

In the older photo, from 2024, Bice has his signature long brown hair and scruffy facial hair, E! News reported. In the new one, the 50-year-old has short, spiky hair, only a soul patch on his chin and a noticeably slimmer frame.

“Ain’t it funny what 2 years’ll do in your life,” Bice wrote, according to E! News. “Here’s a blast from my past and a glimpse into my future with a new life, new style, but the same southern soul.”

EntertainmentNow reported that the caption opened with: “Well, well, Tinkerbell…Who’s THAT guy?!”

Bo Bice’s short hair transformation started in April

The haircut itself isn’t brand new. Bice first showed it off in an April 22 Instagram post after months away from social media, Parade reported. “I’ve been off the grid for way too long now,” he wrote then, saying he had been “shaping up my body, mind & spirit.”

In that post, according to Parade and E! News, he said he had:

• Lost 89 pounds, so he could “move around like I use to on stage and feel better, sharper and stronger”
• Cut his hair “from tail length to the short haired country boy look again,” joking, “A lot lighter and I’m saving on shampoo & conditioner”
• Had dental work for teeth he said were damaged by years of Crohn’s issues, stomach acid and stomach surgeries
• Given up caffeine, alcohol and drugs, describing a “comfortable and healthy lifestyle”

The new before-and-after post brought that change to a much wider audience, with fans saying they barely recognized him, EntertainmentNow reported.

New music: “A Brand New Man”

The latest photos promote an upcoming single. E! News gave the title as “A Brand New Man,” while EntertainmentNow called it “Brand New Man.” EntertainmentNow said it did not appear to be on streaming services yet.

Bice’s last release came in 2024, when his song “Born of Heroes’ Blood” won the Message Song/Social Impact Award at the Hollywood Independent Music Awards, per EntertainmentNow. The outlet added that his website lists a new album, Resurrected, planned for 2027.

“Writing and practicing more than I have in years,” Bice wrote in April. “The faucet is in full flow again and inspiration has returned to well.”

A difficult stretch

The transformation follows a hard year personally. In June, Bice announced that he and his wife, Caroline, were divorcing after 21 years of marriage. “Caroline and I are divorcing, amicably,” he wrote, according to EntertainmentNow.

Bo Bice and American Idol

Bice finished second to Carrie Underwood on season 4 of American Idol in 2005. EntertainmentNow noted that he returned to the show in early 2025.
