Former Mexican TV Host Inés Gómez Mont Detained in Miami on Mexican Tax Fraud Warrant, Prosecutors Say
Inés Gómez Mont, a former Mexican television host and actress who has lived outside Mexico since 2021, was detained in Miami on Friday, Oct. 30, according to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (Fiscalía General de la República, or FGR).
The FGR said the detention followed an exchange of information with the U.S. government and that she is wanted in Mexico on an active arrest warrant. Gómez Mont has denied the accusations against her on several occasions, El Economista reported.
What did Mexican prosecutors say?
In a post on X, the FGR said (translated): “As a result of the exchange of information with the Government of the United States of America, today in Miami, Florida, Inés ‘N’ was detained. She has an active arrest warrant in our country for her probable participation in the crime of equivalent tax fraud.”
Several key details were not in the statement, according to Infobae and El Economista:
- Which U.S. agency carried out the detention
- Whether she faces any charges in the United States
- Whether an extradition process has started, or when she might be sent to Mexico
What is Inés Gómez Mont accused of?
The warrant cited Friday is for defraudación fiscal equiparada, a tax fraud offense under Mexico’s Federal Tax Code. Infobae reported that the FGR has not said what specific acts support that charge or what amount is involved.
Separately, Gómez Mont and her husband, businessman Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga, have been named since 2021 in a broader federal investigation. According to El Financiero and Infobae:
- Prosecutors allege a network of companies won contracts with the federal agency that runs Mexico’s federal prisons, under former President Enrique Peña Nieto, and used invoices for services that were allegedly never provided.
- The contracts under investigation total about 2.95 billion pesos.
- Court documents attributed about 14.8 million pesos in deposits to Gómez Mont from two companies linked to the case, El Financiero reported.
- The FGR has alleged organized crime, embezzlement and money laundering in that case. A federal judge issued arrest warrants on Sept. 29, 2021, Infobae reported.
All of these are allegations. No court has ruled on them, and Gómez Mont has denied the accusations.
Why now? The Interpol decision
The detention came about a month after Interpol canceled the red notices for Gómez Mont and Álvarez Puga, which Infobae said took effect Sept. 25, 2026. Their lawyers had argued, among other things, that the case was politically motivated and that they risked arbitrary pretrial detention in Mexico. Infobae noted these were the defense’s arguments, not an official explanation from Interpol.
Canceling the notices did not void the warrants in Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government would ask Interpol to explain the decision and would keep pressing for the couple’s extradition, El Financiero reported.
Álvarez Puga was detained in the United States in September 2025 by immigration authorities, not on the Mexican charges, according to El Economista. The outlet also said his brother, Alejandro Mario Álvarez Puga, was arrested in Cancún in July on suspicion of tax fraud.
Who is Inés Gómez Mont?
Gómez Mont is a former host of the Mexican entertainment show Ventaneando, El Financiero noted, and is also known as an actress. She has been outside Mexico since the investigation became public in 2021, Infobae reported.
What happens next?
That is unclear. Mexico has not said how it will seek her return, and there is no public information on a U.S. court appearance. Any penalty would be up to a Mexican court after a trial, Infobae noted.
