Sweden’s Andreas Almgren won the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday in his first race at the distance, and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui won the women’s race for the second time in three years. Jessica McClain gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about by finishing second, the best result by an American woman in years.

About 60,000 runners from more than 140 countries started the race, which marked 50 years since the course first went through all five boroughs, ABC7 New York reported. Runner’s World described race-morning conditions as chilly and sunny.

Men’s race: Andreas Almgren wins his marathon debut

Almgren, who built his career at the half marathon, pulled away from Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa in the last mile, according to ABC7 New York, citing the Associated Press. Crippa finished 13 seconds back, and Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho edged defending champion Benson Kipruto for third.

ABC7 reported that Almgren’s time was the third fastest in the course’s 50-year history, and that the top seven finishers all ran among the 10 fastest times ever recorded on the course. He is the first runner to win in his marathon debut in New York since Gebre Gebremariam in 2010.

Women’s race: Chepkirui wins, Jess McClain runs to second

Chepkirui, who also won in 2024, broke away from fellow Kenyan Hellen Obiri, a two-time champion, in the final 150 meters. Behind them, McClain caught Obiri in the last few strides to take second, 6 seconds behind the winner. ABC7 said it was the first time an American woman had finished in the top three since 2018.

Women’s top 5 (Runner’s World): 1. Sheila Chepkirui (KEN), 2:24:36 2. Jessica McClain (USA), 2:24:42 3. Hellen Obiri (KEN), 2:24:43 4. Edna Kiplagat (KEN), 2:25:42 5. Mercy Chelangat (KEN), 2:25:46

Wheelchair races

Marcel Hug won the men’s wheelchair race for the eighth time. ABC7 reported that Daniel Romanchuk took the lead in the final mile, but Hug passed him in the last 100 meters and won by about a second. Catherine Debrunner pulled away early in the women’s race. Her 1:40:02 was the second-fastest time in race history, behind her own 2023 mark. Tatyana McFadden was second, and two-time defending champion Susannah Scaroni was third, three months after giving birth to her first child.

Celebrities, charity and a course change

Runner’s World tracked several well-known finishers, including Jennifer Connelly (3:40:09), Tiki Barber (5:11:49), T.J. Holmes (4:19:35) and Broadway’s Jordan Litz (3:13:48). Pre-race reports speculated Harry Styles might run, but neither of the finish-time roundups we reviewed listed him, so his participation isn’t confirmed.

ABC7 reported that more than $100 million was raised for charity. It also noted the first course change in 15 years: a slightly different route at Mile 20 in the Bronx that cut the turns in that borough from seven to five.
