Tyler Huntley Has Possible Turf Toe, MRI Monday; Joe Fagnano Says He Can Play Thursday vs. Jaguars
A day after undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano was thrown into his NFL debut in Buffalo, the Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback situation looks even shakier. Tyler Huntley is believed to have turf toe and is scheduled for an MRI on Monday. Lamar Jackson is headed for thumb surgery and injured reserve. And the Ravens play again on Thursday night.
That leaves Fagnano as Baltimore’s only healthy quarterback for now, and he says he’s ready.
What happened to Tyler Huntley?
Huntley came in after Jackson hurt his right thumb on Baltimore’s first offensive play of the 36-10 loss to the Bills. He then hurt his toe in the second quarter. He was first listed as questionable to return and then ruled out.
Accounts of the play differ. Ravens Wire said Huntley was hurt when Buffalo safety Cole Bishop sacked him and forced a fumble, while earlier CBS Sports reporting described Bills defender Ed Oliver rolling up on his foot during a tackle.
Tyler Huntley injury: what we know
- Possible turf toe: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Huntley is believed to have turf toe, according to NBC Sports and Ravens Wire.
- MRI Monday: The scan is expected to show how severe the injury is and whether he will miss time.
- No official timetable: As of late Sunday, the Ravens had not announced a diagnosis or a recovery timeline.
Turf toe is an injury to the ligaments around the big toe joint. Ravens Wire noted it can affect a quarterback’s ability to push off and move in the pocket, and severity varies widely. ProFootballTalk wrote that Thursday “seems like too much to ask” given that Huntley couldn’t return Sunday.
Huntley had started Baltimore’s previous three games while Jackson recovered from an ankle injury. The Ravens went 1-2 in those games.
Lamar Jackson heads to IR
Coach Jesse Minter said Jackson could miss the rest of the season after thumb surgery, ProFootballTalk reported. A move to injured reserve means he will miss at least four games.
Who starts Thursday vs. the Jaguars?
That isn’t settled. The Ravens host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night at M&T Bank Stadium, and as of Sunday night it was unclear who would start, according to NBC Sports.
Joe Fagnano says he can go. The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec reported, via NBC Sports, that Fagnano was “hobbled by game’s end” after a low hit from Bills defensive lineman Ed Oliver that drew a penalty. Fagnano still said he thinks he’s healthy enough to play in Week 9. “You’re always going to have bumps and bruises,” he said, adding that he and the team will “see” how he feels over the next few days.
His debut line was 10 of 21 for 91 yards with an interception and a lost fumble. Baltimore managed only 144 total yards against a Buffalo defense that had four sacks, per Ravens Wire. Fagnano earned his roster spot by leading the NFL with 509 passing yards in the preseason.
The Ravens’ 3rd-string QB problem
Baltimore doesn’t have a quarterback on its practice squad, ProFootballTalk noted, so it needs to add at least one before Thursday. Zrebiec wrote that the Ravens “will almost certainly have to bring in at least one quarterback, if not two,” and named Anthony Richardson Sr. and Tua Tagovailoa as possible trade targets, according to NBC Sports. Those are possibilities, not reported talks.
The stakes are real. The Ravens (4-4) have lost three straight and entered the season expecting to compete for the AFC North title.
