Braelon Allen and Adonai Mitchell Post Career Days, but Jets Still Can't Close in 38-33 Loss to Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders’ 38-33 comeback win at MetLife Stadium on Sunday ended on Jeremy Chinn’s interception in the end zone. On the Jets’ side, it wasted two of the best games of their players’ careers.
Running back Braelon Allen ran for a career-high 147 yards, and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell caught seven passes for a career-best 142 yards. New York scored on its first six possessions, led by nine at halftime and topped 30 points for the first time this season. It still lost, falling to 2-6.
Braelon Allen: career-high 147 yards
Allen was making his fifth straight start in place of Breece Hall, who is out with a quad injury. He finished with 21 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown, according to the Jets’ website. Most of it came early: 17 carries for 121 yards in the first half.
His 21-yard touchdown run made it 30-21 with 8:26 left in the third quarter. After that, the Jets had to chase the game, and Allen got only two more carries and one catch. He also had two receptions for 6 yards on the day, per SNY’s report on Yahoo Sports.
Some numbers from the team’s recap:
- Allen has run for 100-plus yards in three of the last four games.
- He has 565 rushing yards over his five-game stretch as the starter.
- He had five runs of 10-plus yards Sunday and 19 over the past four games.
There was one scare. SNY reported that Allen limped to the medical tent with 10:49 left but returned two minutes later and finished the game.
“Very disappointing,” Allen said. “Obviously, no matter how many times you score, or don’t score, winning the game is the objective.”
Adonai Mitchell’s breakout
Mitchell led all players with 142 receiving yards. He caught a fourth-down touchdown from Geno Smith in the first half and had a 47-yard catch in the fourth quarter as the Jets tried to come back from 35-30 down.
According to SNY, Mitchell had topped 58 receiving yards only once before since the Jets traded for him midway through last season.
“I think we had a good week of practice, and I think the preparation just met the moment,” Mitchell said.
Jets fallout: Aaron Glenn on defense and special teams
Coach Aaron Glenn praised the offense, which ran for 166 yards at 6.1 yards per carry. “Braelon did a hell of a job,” he said. “He had close to 150 yards, and I think that speaks for itself.”
The problems were on the other side of the ball. Las Vegas scored 24 points in the second half, and a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown by Dylan Laube in the first half had already hurt. Five of the Jets’ six losses have been decided by one score, SNY noted.
“I can sit here and talk about how close we are, but that’s not going to do us any good at all,” Glenn said. “Our guys play with effort. They play hard. There’s no quit in this group… it’s just some of the things on defense and special teams that we’ve got to make sure we get better at.”
When will Breece Hall return?
There’s no set date. “Breece is close. He’s close,” Glenn said, adding that the team wants to handle the situation “the right way.”
