Sophie Cunningham Says FBI Is Watching About 20 People Over Stalking Concerns, Weighs In on Anthem Debate
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham sat down for a long conversation on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast this week, and several of her comments quickly made headlines. The biggest: she said she believes the FBI is keeping an eye on roughly 20 people because of their behavior toward her.
The episode also touched on the WNBA Finals anthem debate, her friendship with former Phoenix Mercury teammate Brittney Griner and her uncertain future as a pending free agent.
Sophie Cunningham on stalkers and the FBI
Cunningham was discussing the WNBA’s surge in popularity when the subject turned to safety. “The more you’re visible on TV, you’re going to get more fans,” she told Von, according to the Los Angeles Times. “But there’s also a lot of like kind of crazy people, too. Like, we do have a lot of stalkers. I know I do.”
She then said she thinks there are “20, I think, people kind of that the FBI are watching for me,” adding, “Me alone.” MARCA reported that she also said she would have to check whether she was even allowed to share that, and she did not identify anyone. The FBI declined to comment to the Times.
The Kevin Singh case
One case is already in court. Kevin Singh, 49, faces felony stalking and intimidation charges and a misdemeanor harassment charge, the Times reported. He was arrested in June and has been held in Marion County Jail in Indiana on $40,000 bail. Reports differ slightly on the arrest date: the Times said June 24, while MARCA said June 23.
According to the arrest affidavit cited by the Times, Singh sent Cunningham numerous messages on X and, in September 2025, delivered a package with her name on it to the Fever’s arena that contained a letter and a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt sprayed with men’s cologne. Cunningham told investigators she had been having nightmares and staying home more, the affidavit said.
Last week a judge denied Singh’s request to change his bail, and a jury trial is scheduled for January, per the Times. MARCA reported that Cunningham learned of that ruling during the podcast and responded, “Nice. Good work, judge.” Singh has not been convicted.
The Times also noted that last year a Texas man was sentenced to 2½ years in prison for stalking and harassing Cunningham’s Fever teammate Caitlin Clark.
Sophie Cunningham on the national anthem
During these WNBA Finals, the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries have not been on the court for the national anthem, a choice that has drawn strong reactions. Cunningham did not call out either team, the New York Post reported, but said she personally wants to show her support for people who serve in the military.
“This has been happening throughout the whole season. This isn’t like anything new, people are getting mad about it now but it’s happened the whole season,” she said, per the Post. “I am grateful and I support the people who serve. We have family members who have served.”
What she said about Brittney Griner
Cunningham and Griner played together in Phoenix from 2019 to 2024. “Brittney Griner gets the worst rap. She is the coolest person you will ever meet,” Cunningham said, according to Yahoo Sports. Her only complaint was about a member of Griner’s security detail, who she said accidentally hit her in the nose with a designer bag while rushing to push people away, leaving her with a black eye.
What’s next: Sophie Cunningham free agency
Cunningham just finished her sixth WNBA season and is headed for free agency. Yahoo Sports reported that former Fever general manager Amber Cox had said the team would work on bringing her back, but Cox was fired last week. Cunningham said there “was not a lot of warning” and that she would “see what happens.”
