The Elder Scrolls VI Will Reportedly Be Called 'Sentinel,' Set in Hammerfell, With a Title Reveal as Soon as November
More than eight years after a brief teaser announced it, Bethesda’s next mainline Elder Scrolls game may finally have a name. According to a report from The Verge’s Tom Warren, the game will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, and the official title could be revealed as soon as November.
Bethesda has not publicly confirmed the name or any other details, Collider noted, so everything below should be treated as reported, not official.
What is The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel?
Citing sources familiar with Bethesda’s plans, Warren reported that:
- The full title will be The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.
- The game will be set in Hammerfell, a province of the series’ continent of Tamriel.
- Sentinel will be the first game about the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves and will help uncover the secrets of these mysterious ancient artifacts, according to a passage quoted by Nintendo Life.
GamesRadar+ said the reported title lines up with rumors and fan theories that have circulated for months, and that the report backs up earlier talk of a return to Hammerfell.
Where is Hammerfell?
Hammerfell has rarely been the focus of recent Elder Scrolls games. GamesRadar+ noted it appeared in The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, the spinoff The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and the online game The Elder Scrolls Online. A full mainline game set there would be a change of scenery after Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, each of which, as Collider put it, was closely tied to a particular destination.
When will Elder Scrolls 6 be revealed?
The Verge’s sources point to a reveal as soon as next month. Nintendo Life and Collider both noted that the timing would line up with the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which launched on Nov. 11, 2011.
Expectations should stay modest. GamesRadar+ said that, per the report, only the official title is expected to be revealed, with nothing beyond that. Collider likewise described it as a title reveal rather than a larger presentation.
GamesRadar+ also pointed out that a November reveal would land in the same month as Rockstar’s GTA 6, which it said is due Nov. 19, though a name announcement isn’t a direct competitor to a game launch.
Is the game playable yet?
Reports suggest development is well along. GamesRadar+, citing The Verge, said Bethesda Game Studios has shown gameplay internally in recent months, including a widely reported live playthrough viewed by new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Nintendo Life said recent reports describe the game as being in a respectable, playable state.
Elder Scrolls 6 release date and platforms
No release date has been announced, and Nintendo Life said platforms also haven’t been locked in. Collider noted the game was first announced in 2018 with a short teaser that showed little more than a landscape, and fans have been waiting ever since.
Why it matters
Skyrim has stayed popular for 15 years, through multiple re-releases including an Anniversary Edition. Its successor is one of the most anticipated games in the industry, and even a subtitle would give players their first real sense of where the series is headed next. Until Bethesda speaks, the Sentinel name and Hammerfell setting remain unconfirmed reports.
