Election Day 2026: When and Where to Vote in the Midterms, Poll Hours and When Results Come In
Election Day for the 2026 midterm elections is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Voters across the country will choose every member of the U.S. House, 35 U.S. senators, and, in most states, governors, state legislators and local officials. If you have not voted early or by mail, Tuesday is your day to cast a ballot in person.
Here is a plain, nonpartisan guide to the basics. Rules differ a lot from state to state, so the single most useful step is to check with your own state or local election office, or start at vote.gov, the federal government’s official portal that points you to your state’s election website.
When is voting day?
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. Midterms happen halfway through a president’s four-year term, and they do not decide the presidency, Hindustan Times noted. Early voting has already been open in many states, and the outlet, citing The Sun, reported that more than 50 million Americans had already voted before Election Day.
What time do polls open on Election Day?
There is no single national schedule. Polling hours are set by states and, in some cases, counties. Most polling places open between 6 and 7 a.m. and close between 7 and 8 p.m. local time, according to Hindustan Times. A few examples it gave:
- Georgia and Florida: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Ohio: 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Some very small towns may open later in the morning.
Check your exact hours with your local election office before you go.
Important: If you are in line when the polls close, stay in line. Voters who are in line at closing time are still allowed to vote, both Hindustan Times and KVUE reported.
Can I vote today, and when is the last day to vote?
In-person Election Day voting happens on Tuesday, Nov. 3, which is the last day to vote in person in the general election. Whether you can still vote early on Monday, Nov. 2, depends on your state; many early voting periods have already ended. If you have a mail ballot, rules on when it must be postmarked or received differ by state. For example, KVUE reported that in California, mail ballots postmarked by Election Day can arrive up to seven days later, and in Nevada up to four days later. Other states require ballots to arrive by Election Day, so check your state’s deadline and drop-box options.
Where do I vote?
Your polling place is usually assigned based on your home address, and your name may not appear on the voter list at another location, Hindustan Times reported. Some states, including California and Nevada, let registered voters use any approved vote center in their county on Election Day.
To find your polling place:
- Go to vote.gov and follow the link to your state’s official election site.
- Use your state or county election office’s polling-place lookup.
- Nonprofit tools such as Vote.org and VOTE411 also list polling locations.
If you have moved or changed your name since the last election, double-check your registration details, since your polling place is linked to them.
Do I need ID?
It depends on the state. Hindustan Times, citing The Sun, reported that 36 states ask voters for some form of identification, and some require a photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID card or passport. The National Conference of State Legislatures and your Secretary of State’s website list exactly what is accepted where you live.
What is on the ballot?
According to KVUE:
- U.S. House: All 435 seats are up. A party needs 218 for a majority.
- U.S. Senate: 35 seats are on the ballot. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority; Democrats would need a net gain of four seats to reach 51, while Republicans keep control with 50 because the vice president breaks ties.
Voters will also pick governors in 36 states, Hindustan Times reported, and nearly every state has legislative races. Many ballots include local offices and ballot measures as well. Most election offices post a sample ballot online so you can review it ahead of time.
When do the polls close and when will results come in?
Results start arriving as polls close. KVUE reported that polls close at 6 p.m. Eastern in parts of Indiana and Kentucky, and most states close between 7 and 9 p.m. Eastern. Some key times it listed:
- 7 p.m. ET: Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and most of Florida
- 7:30 p.m. ET: North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia
- 8 p.m. ET: Pennsylvania, Illinois, Maine and most of Michigan and Texas, among others
- 11 p.m. ET: California and Washington
- 1 a.m. ET Wednesday: the last polls, in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands
Who is winning the midterm elections 2026?
No official results exist until polls close, and early numbers can shift as more ballots are counted. KVUE noted that control of a chamber could be clear on election night if the national swing is large, but a close contest can take more than a week. In 2022, the AP did not call the House until eight days after Election Day.
Some states count slowly by design. Alaska uses ranked-choice voting, and if no Senate candidate tops 50%, the ranked-choice count happens Nov. 18, KVUE reported. Georgia holds runoffs on Dec. 1 for races where no one wins a majority. States then certify results over the following weeks, and the new Congress is sworn in at noon on Jan. 3, 2027.
Problems at the polls?
If you run into trouble, ask a poll worker first; if you are at the wrong location, poll workers can guide you to the right one, Hindustan Times noted. Your state or county election office can answer questions about registration and ID.
