DC fans hoping to see the first footage from Man of Tomorrow before the end of the year will have to keep waiting. Writer-director James Gunn has publicly shot down reports that the first trailer for his follow-up to 2025’s Superman would play in theaters alongside Dune: Part Three in December.

The film itself remains on track for July 9, 2027, and Gunn has offered a few new glimpses into how editing is going.

Man of Tomorrow trailer: what Gunn said

The rumor had a logical hook. Dune: Part Three, another Warner Bros. release, opens Dec. 18, 2026, and big studios often attach a first teaser to a major holiday release. Gunn’s own Superman debuted its first trailer in December 2024, about seven months before that film opened, Filmverse noted.

But when a post on Threads claimed the Man of Tomorrow teaser was “expected” with Dune, Gunn replied, “Expected by whom???” When a fan suggested he was letting people down, he answered: “More like James not wanting people to be disappointed when there’s no trailer in December,” according to Filmverse, which cited ComingSoon.net and Dark Horizons.

Gunn has not given a new date for the first trailer. Filmverse described it as the third rumor about the film that Gunn has personally knocked down since September.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran had already sounded cautious about timing. Asked by IGN when the marketing push would begin, he said, “I think it’s early days, it’s early days. That’s something that we’ll determine in the coming month,” Screen Rant reported.

Man of Tomorrow release date

Man of Tomorrow opens in theaters on July 9, 2027. Principal photography wrapped in late August 2026, according to Screen Rant and Filmverse.

Gunn appears to be deep in the editing phase. Replying to a fan on Threads, he said a small group, including Lars Eidinger, had seen the latest cut, and explained: “I try to recut over the week and screen the latest version for a few new eyes every Friday. It’s exciting,” SuperHeroHype reported.

What is Man of Tomorrow about?

DC Studios has kept plot details under wraps. The broad setup, reported by GQ and cited by SuperHeroHype, is that Clark Kent and his longtime enemy Lex Luthor are forced to team up against Brainiac, an alien android with advanced technology and a vast intellect. Gunn has framed the movie as the next chapter in his “Superman Saga” rather than a simple Superman 2, and has said he wants to dig into Luthor’s humanity. Concept art he shared when the release date was announced showed Luthor in high-tech power armor beside Superman.

Man of Tomorrow cast

Reported and confirmed cast members include:

  • David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman
  • Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor
  • Lars Eidinger as Brainiac
  • Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
  • Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern
  • Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner
  • Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific
  • Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen
  • Milly Alcock as Supergirl

Screen Rant also reported that Adria Arjona, Matthew Lillard and Sinqua Walls have joined in undisclosed roles. Exact roles for some supporting players differ slightly between outlets, so treat the list as a guide until DC Studios releases a full lineup.

The Green Lantern connection

Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, introduced in HBO’s Lanterns, is set to appear in the film. Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy said on The Midnight Boys podcast that his team did not know at first that the character would show up in Man of Tomorrow. “At a certain point, we did,” he said, according to The Direct, adding that part of the show’s job was “to launch John as a character.”
