US Strikes Iran's Qeshm Island in What Officials Call Limited, Defensive Action on Eve of Midterms
The United States carried out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, Nov. 2, according to US officials who spoke to several news outlets. The officials described the action as limited and defensive, and said it was not a return to major combat operations. The strikes came hours before Tuesday’s US midterm elections and while mediators are trying to keep the two sides talking.
Many details are still unclear. The accounts below are attributed to the outlets and officials that gave them, and some of them conflict.
What happened on Qeshm Island?
Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported explosions on Qeshm on Monday, according to the BBC and RFE/RL. US officials then confirmed to CBS (the BBC’s US partner), RFE/RL and The Jerusalem Post that American forces had struck the island. The Wall Street Journal first reported the strikes, according to The New York Times, RFE/RL and The Jerusalem Post.
The reasons given by US officials vary slightly by outlet:
- CBS, via the BBC: officials said the strikes were a response to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) firing on a US aircraft.
- The Jerusalem Post: one US official said IRGC personnel launched a missile from Qeshm toward an American aircraft over the strait. Another said the strikes targeted Iranians using surface-to-air missiles against US assets.
- The Guardian: the US described the strikes as aimed at missile batteries used in Iranian attacks on US planes the day before.
The IRGC did not comment on the strikes directly, the BBC reported. It did say its forces shot down two US MQM-170 drones south of the island and a US MQ-9 drone east of the Strait of Hormuz. US officials have not publicly confirmed those losses in the reports we reviewed.
Did the US military confirm the strikes?
Reports differ. The Guardian wrote that the strikes were confirmed by US Central Command (CENTCOM). The BBC reported that the US military had not commented. The Jerusalem Post said the Pentagon referred questions to CENTCOM, which did not respond. Confirmation in the other reports came from unnamed US officials.
The Guardian also reported that Iranian officials first blamed Israel before conceding the US was responsible, and that Israel said it had no role.
Is this a new US war with Iran?
US officials say no, at least for now. The New York Times reported officials as saying there are no immediate plans to escalate, and that Monday’s strike resembled other small-scale US strikes on Iran in recent weeks meant to stop attacks on ships in the strait. RFE/RL, citing the Journal, said those earlier operations were kept quiet on purpose to avoid signaling a return to major combat.
The wider war began in February, when the US and Israel attacked Iran, according to the BBC. A preliminary deal reached in June to end the fighting and reopen the strait fell apart within weeks, the BBC said. The Guardian said similar military exchanges have happened at least three times since major hostilities stopped.
What Trump and Iran are saying
President Donald Trump has played down talk of a larger campaign. Asked on Monday whether he would strike Iran after the midterms, he said “No,” the BBC and RFE/RL reported. He told Axios there was “no rush.” In a Fox News interview, he said the US “might need to go after Pickaxe [Mountain],” an underground site linked to Iran’s nuclear program, and called that “not a big deal,” according to the BBC.
The Associated Press, cited by the BBC, reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed Trump in a weekend call for another wave of strikes after the midterms.
On the Iranian side, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran is “still in a state of war,” the Guardian reported. Parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said “the ball is now in America’s court to prevent war,” according to the BBC.
Why Qeshm Island matters
Qeshm sits at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz. The BBC says about a fifth of global oil and gas shipments usually pass through the strait, which has been effectively closed since the war began. Citing the Journal, RFE/RL reported the island has a large underground missile facility, a naval base and a major desalination plant. It added that US officials have discussed possibly seizing the island.
The Jerusalem Post, citing Iran’s semi-official Tasnim agency, also reported that the IRGC Navy said three oil tankers hit mines and caught fire in the strait on Tuesday. That claim comes from Iranian sources and had not been independently confirmed in the reports we reviewed.
Where talks stand
Qatar’s foreign ministry said both sides were “reviewing the ideas and proposals we have presented,” per the BBC. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described “very intensive” talks through Qatari and Pakistani mediators. The Guardian reported that Vice President JD Vance had voiced optimism hours before the strikes. It also said mediators believe it should be clear within about two days whether indirect talks can continue.
