Who won the World Series? Not yet: Rays walk off Brewers 4-3 in 12 innings to force Game 5
Nobody has won the 2026 World Series yet. The Milwaukee Brewers were three outs from the first title in franchise history on Tuesday night, but the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 12th inning to win Game 4, 4-3, at Tropicana Field. Milwaukee still leads the best-of-seven series 3-1, and Game 5 is Wednesday night in St. Petersburg.
The game lasted 4 hours, 20 minutes, ran 367 pitches and ended at 12:28 a.m., according to the Associated Press.
Did the Brewers win the World Series?
Not yet. Rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt put Milwaukee on the brink with a solo home run off Rays lefty Ian Seymour leading off the top of the 12th, giving the Brewers a 3-2 lead. Pratt finished with four hits, and MLB.com notes he became the first rookie with four hits in a potential World Series clincher. His homer was also the first extra-inning World Series home run by a rookie.
Seymour, who had replaced Cam Booser, then got NLCS MVP Jake Bauers to pop out with a runner on second to keep the deficit at one.
Who won Game 4 of the World Series, and how?
The Rays did, with a string of singles. The rally unfolded this way:
- Junior Caminero led off with a grounder to third, and Joey Ortiz’s bounced throw glanced off Bauers’ glove for an error.
- Brewers manager Pat Murphy brought in left-hander Shane Drohan, who had not pitched since Oct. 15.
- Liam Hicks singled through the left side, sending Caminero to third.
- Jonny DeLuca singled up the middle, scoring pinch-runner Cedric Mullins to tie it 3-3.
- Chandler Simpson lined a single to load the bases.
- Pinch-hitter Ben Williamson, who had been 1-for-15 in the postseason per AP, chopped a ball over Bauers into short right field, scoring Nick Fortes with the winning run.
“We pieced together a big inning, maybe the most important inning of our season,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said, according to MLB.com.
Earlier, Simpson’s RBI double gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead in the second, Pratt’s double tied it in the fourth, and a throwing error by David Hamilton let Caminero score for a 2-1 Rays lead. Hamilton answered with a solo homer in the fifth, and the game stayed tied at 2 until the 12th.
What did the Brewers say?
“If you want to win a championship, you’re supposed to survive some hard things,” Brewers captain Christian Yelich said, per MLB.com. “It’s supposed to be hard. It’s supposed to test you.”
Ortiz took the blame for the error. “I’ve got to make that play,” he said, according to AP. Drohan said, “I knew what I was walking into. I just didn’t do the job there.”
Records and notes from Game 4
- Aaron Ashby threw 2 1/3 more scoreless innings and is up to 18 straight scoreless innings, the longest streak by a reliever within a single postseason, passing Andrew Miller’s 16 in 2016 (MLB.com).
- Jackson Chourio has 10 hits in the series, tied with Babe Ruth (1928) for the most through the first four games of a World Series.
- Walk-off history: It was the 17th walk-off win by a team facing elimination in World Series history. The only other team to do it while facing a sweep was the 1910 Cubs.
- Injury watch: Caminero appeared to hurt his left foot and left the game, but he said he will play Wednesday. “He’ll play tomorrow on one leg,” Cash said.
When was the last World Series sweep?
The last sweep came in 2012, when the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers. MLB.com notes that 14 straight World Series have now gone without a sweep, the longest streak in history. The Brewers’ eight-game postseason winning streak also ended Tuesday.
When is Game 5 of the World Series, and what channel?
Game 5 is Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field, on FOX and FOX Deportes, with streaming on FOX One, per MLB.com.
- Brewers starter: Jacob Misiorowski, who led MLB in ERA (1.80) and strikeouts (252) in the regular season.
- Rays starter: Not announced as of Wednesday morning. Cash said he had not decided, and MLB.com reported that a bullpen game looks likely after the Rays used Game 1 starter Nick Martinez in relief on Tuesday.
If Tampa Bay wins, the series returns to Milwaukee after an off-day Thursday.
